Oily skin has an excess of the skin’s natural lubricant/oil known as Sebum. It is naturally caused by their genetic makeup but may also be caused extrinsically i.e. By the use of harsh stripping products.
The skin is an organ and will actively increase Sebum production to compensate the stripping effect. Also, some medication may affect the skin as well as lifestyle i.e. a poor diet, occupation, excessive UV exposure.
True oily skin has areas that gleam and shine and this oil will feel thick and waxy. The skin is thick in density with large open pores and there are true blackheads.
Due to the alkaline pH of the oil, the skin has little protection from the acid mantle and infection and bacteria are rife. Spots develop and cross infection spreads through incorrect care - An acne type problem may develop. (not to be confused with hormonal acne, where there will be little oil but red angry skin with spots).
Ageing occurs as maturity is reached, but these changes happen slowly. The signs of ageing arrive in the mid to late twenties, which suggests the process starts in our early twenties and quickens considerably in our thirties.
A true oily skin ages slower than most skin types due to the excess lubricant and, as age increases, the oil flow slows but is still greater than average.
Problems may occur if a true oily skin suffers years of abuse from harsh products and medication.
In later years, problems such as acne rosacea may become apparent - which is why it is important to care for the skin gently but efficiently throughout one’s life.
If cared for properly, the youthfulness of an oily skin may be enjoyed longer than most others!
