A combination skin is more than one skin type. In this case the combination is an oily skin type with surface dehydration. The oiliness is an excess of the skin’s natural lubricant/oil know as Sebum, which is produced excessively due to their genetic make up, but may also be caused extrinsically by different factors, such as harsh stripping products. The dehydration is caused by the environment, caffeine, alcohol, smoking and central heating, to name but a few and is the lack of water/hydration.
Without proper advice and care, a combination skin of your type is difficult to look after and a skincare ‘see-saw’ effect is common - the use of dry skin products until the skin is too oily to handle, followed by oily skin products to strip out the excess oil and dry the skin out again is a usual and common error.
The skin is often sallow in colour with some blackheads, congestion and spots. The correct care is essential to balance out this skin type.
Ageing occurs as maturity is reached, but these changes happen slowly. The signs of ageing arrive in the mid to late twenties, which suggests the process starts in our early twenties and quickens considerably in our thirties.
An oily skin ages slower than most skin types due to the excess lubricant.
Dehydrated skin, however, shows fine lines due to a ‘parched’ skin surface.
Problems can be corrected with a combination of products and treatments for oily and dehydrated skin.
If cared for properly, the youthfulness of oily/dehydrated combination skin may be enjoyed longer than most, with premature fine lines banished effectively.
